Liutward
archchancellor of the Carolingian Empire and bishop of Vercelli
Years: 840 - 895
Liutward is the archchancellor of the Carolingian Empire from 878 and the bishop of Vercelli from 880 by appointment of Charles the Fat, whose chief minister he is.
He should not be confused with his predecessor in this office of the same name, an archbishop of Mainz.
Never liked by the nobility, he is trusted by Charles as a confidante and go-between with the papacy.
