Years: 1716 - 1794

James Lind FRSE FRCPE (October 4, 1716 – July 13, 1794) is a Scottish physician.

He is a pioneer of naval hygiene in the Royal Navy.

By conducting the first ever clinical trial, he develops the theory that citrus fruits cure scurvy.

He argues for the health benefits of better ventilation aboard naval ships, the improved cleanliness of sailors' bodies, clothing and bedding, and below-deck fumigation with sulfur and arsenic.

He also proposes that fresh water can be obtained by distilling sea water.

His work advances the practice of preventive medicine and improved nutrition.
