Ilterish Qaghan

founder of the Second Turkic Khaganate
Years: 640 - 694

Ilterish Qaghan (died 694), is the founder of the Second Turkic Khaganate (reigning 682–694).

In the 680s he leaves the sinicized tribes near China and returns to the Mongolian steppe, whence he raises an army and reconquers most of the lands of the first Eastern Turkic Khaganate.

His name Il-teris means uniter, refounder (teriş) of the nation (il).

He is succeeded by his brother, Qapaghan Qaghan, because his son Bilge Qaghan is too young.
