Horatio Gates
British soldier
Years: 1727 - 1806
Horatio Lloyd Gates (July 26, 1727 – April 10, 1806) is a retired British soldier who serves as an American general during the Revolutionary War.
He takes credit for the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga–Benedict Arnold, who led the attack, is finally forced from the field when he is shot in the leg–and is blamed for the defeat at the Battle of Camden.
Gates has been described as "one of the Revolution's most controversial military figures" because of his role in the Conway Cabal, which attempted to discredit and replace George Washington; the battle at Saratoga; and Gates's actions after his defeat at Camden.
