Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke (16 September 1678 – 12 December 1751) is an English politician, government official and political philosopher.

He is a leader of the Tories.

In 1715 he supports the Jacobite rebellion of 1715, which seeks to overthrow the new king George I. Escaping to France, he becomes foreign minister for the Old Pretender.

He is attainted for treason, but reverses course and is allowed to return to England in 1723.

He is best known as the philosopher of the Country Party.
