Girolamo Savonarola
Italian Dominican priest and leader of Florence
Years: 1452 - 1498
Girolamo Savonarola (21 September 1452, Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna – 23 May 1498, Florence) is an Italian Dominican priest and leader of Florence from 1494 until his execution in 1498.
He is known for his book burning, destruction of what he considers immoral art, and hostility to the Renaissance.
He vehemently preaches against the moral corruption of much of the clergy at the time, and his main opponent is Rodrigo Borgia, who is Pope Alexander VI from 1492, through Savonarola's death, to 1503.
