George Marshall
50th United States Secretary of State
Years: 1880 - 1959
George Catlett Marshall, Jr. GCB (December 31, 1880 – October 16, 1959), is an American military leader, Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and the third Secretary of Defense.
Once noted as the "organizer of victory" by Winston Churchill for his leadership of the Allied victory in the Second World War, Marshall serves as the United States Army Chief of Staff during the war and as the chief military adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Marshall's name is given to the Marshall Plan, subsequent to a commencement address he presented as Secretary of State at Harvard University in the spring of 1947.
The speech broadly outlined for Europeans to create their own plan for rebuilding Europe after the Second World War, funded by the United States.
Marshall receives the Nobel Peace Prize for the plan in 1953.
