Norway and Iceland emerged from Danish control into independence (1905, 1944), while Denmark rebuilt as a modern agricultural and industrial power. Jane Eyre, which follows the experiences of its eponymous heroine, including her growth to adulthood and her love for Mr. Rochester, the brooding master of Thornfield Hall, contains elements of social criticism, with a strong sense of Christian morality at its core.

Agnes Grey is largely based on Anne Brontë's own experiences as a governess for five years.

Like her sister Charlotte's novel, it addresses what the precarious position of governess entails and how it affects a young woman.
