Reccared I sends word of his conversion to Catholicism early in 589 to Septimania, where it incites a rebellion on behalf of Arianism by two prominent counts, Granista and Wildigern, and the bishop Athaloc.

The rebels seek to overthrow Reccared and the Catholic faith and to this end they call in the aid of the Catholic and Frankish king of Burgundy, Guntram.

Guntram sends an expedition under the general Boso into Septimania in support of the rebellion against Visigothic rule.

Claudius, duke (dux) of Lusitania, defeats the Franks and Burgundians at Carcassonne on the Aude River, killing five thousand and capturing two thousand, as well as their camp.

Many Catholics die in the process of the rebellion.

Athaloc, however, is not deposed and will die a natural death, never converting to Catholicism.
