Ashot II of Armenia

King of Armenia
Years: 875 - 928

Ashot II the Iron (Ashot Yerkat) (ruled 914–928) is an Armenian King, the son of King Smbat I.

His reign is filled with rebellions by pretenders to the throne, and foreign invasions, which Ashot fights off successfully.

This is how he receives the epithet “the Iron”.

In 914, Ashot II visits Constantinople to get aid from Byzantine Emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus.

He returns to Armenia and crushes the Arab harassment of his lands by Yusuf ibn Abi'l-Saj.

In 922, he is recognized as the ruler of Armenia by the Abbasid caliph.

He is married to Marie of Kachum.
