Ann Lee

leader of the Shakers (United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing)
Years: 1736 - 1784

Ann Lee (February 29, 1736 – September 8, 1784), commonly known as Mother Ann Lee, is the leader of the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing, or the Shakers.

In 1774 Ann Lee and a small group of her followers emigrates from England to New York.

After several years, they gather at Niskayuna, renting land from the Manor of Rensselaerswyck, Albany County, New York (the area now called Colonie).

They worship by ecstatic dancing or "shaking", which dubs them as the Shakers. Ann Lee preaches to the public and leads the Shaker church at a time when few women are religious leaders
