The world's first commercial savings bank, paying interest on its investors' modest savings, is opened by The Reverend Doctor Henry Duncan, a minister, author, antiquarian, geologist, publisher, philanthropist, artist and businessman in the village of Ruthwell, Scotland, on May 10, 1810.
