Pandulf III, Lombard prince of Benevento, had abdicated to the monastery of S. Sofia, probably in 1059, leaving his son Landulf and his grtandson, the younger Pandulf, sole princes.
Pandulf IV had probably present on October 1, 1071 at the reconsecration of the Abbey of Monte Cassino.
He does not appear in the August 12, 1073, charter in which his father had sworn fidelity to Pope Gregory VII.
At that point, however, Landulf does not appear again in the chronicles and Pandulf seems to have taken over the main responsibilities as prince.
Pandulf wars against the Normans and is killed at the Battle of Montesarchio on February 7, 1074.
