Daraa, known at this time as as "Adhri'at", had a large Jewish population by the early seventh century and serves as a place of Jewish learning.
It is ideally situated between the major Jewish cities of Palestine and Babylonia and its residents lit an annual bonfire on Rosh Hashannah in a signal to Babylonia's Jewish communities that the religious new year began.
