Yaruba dynasty

Years: 1624 - 1742

The Yaruba dynasty (also spelled Ya'Aruba or Ya'arubi) are rulers of Oman between 1624 and 1742, holding the title of Imam.

They expel the Portuguese from coastal strongholds in Muscat and unite the country.

They improve agriculture, expand trade and build up Oman into a major maritime power.

Their forces expel the Portuguese from East Africa north of Mozambique and establish long-lasting settlements on Zanzibar, Mombasa and other parts of the coast.

The dynasty loses power during a succession struggle starting in 1712 and falls after a prolonged period of civil war.
