United States of America (US, USA) (New York NY)

Years: 1789 - 1790

In 1785, the assembly of the Congress of the Confederation had made New York the national capital shortly after the war.

New York is the last capital of the U.S. under the Articles of Confederation and the first capital under the Constitution of the United States.

The federal government is reorganized into three branches, on the principle of creating salutary checks and balances, in 1789.

In 1789, the first President of the United States, George Washington, who had led the revolutionary army to victory, is inaugurated; the first United States Congress and the Supreme Court of the United States each assemble for the first time, and the United States Bill of Rights is drafted, all at Federal Hall on Wall Street.

By 1790, New York has surpassed Philadelphia as the largest city in the United States.
