The Soviet Occupation Zone (German: Sowjetische Besatzungszone (SBZ) or Ostzone; "Soviet Occupation Zone of Germany") is the area of central Germany occupied by the Soviet Union from 1945 on, at the end of the Second World War II.

On October 7, 1949 the German Democratic Republic, which becomes commonly referred to as East Germany, is established in the Soviet Occupation Zone.
