Pequot people are a tribe of Native Americans who, in the seventeenth century, inhabit much of what is now Connecticut.

They are of the Algonquian language family.

The Pequot War and Mystic massacre reduce the Pequot's sociopolitical influence in southern New England.The Mashantucket Pequot Tribe of Connecticut, a federally recognized tribe as of 1983, and the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation (EPTN), a state recognized tribe in Connecticut, are the descendants of the historic Pequot.

The EPTN gained federal recognition in June 2002, but the state challenged and lobbied against their status.

The Department of the Interior revoke the recognition in 2005, as they also do this year in the case of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation of Connecticut.

These are the first instances since the 1970s that the BIA has terminated federal recognition.
