Mohegan people (Amerind tribe)
Years: 1500 - 2057
The Mohegan tribe is an Algonquian-speaking tribe that lives in the eastern upper Thames River valley of Connecticut.
At the time of European contact, the Mohegan were a conjoined tribe with the Pequot, historically in the lower Connecticut region.
Before the early 17th century, they became a separate tribe, independent of the Pequot.
They briefly came under Pequot rule in the 1630s until the dominant tribe was destroyed in 1637.
Many members live on the Mohegan Reservation in Montville, New London County.
The tribe gained federal recognition in 1994.
It operates the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, as well as a casino at Pocono Downs, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
They also own the WNBA team, the Connecticut Sun.
