The Liao Dynasty (also known as the Khitan Empire) is an empire in East Asia that rules over Mongolia and portions of the Russian Far East and northern China proper from 907 to 1125.

It is founded by the Khitan Great Khan Abaoji around the time of the collapse of the Han Chinese Tang Dynasty.The Liao Empire is destroyed by the Jurchen people of the Jin Dynasty in 1125.

However, remnants of its people, led by Yelü Dashi, establish the Western Liao Dynasty, also known as the Kara-Khitan Khanate, which rules over parts of Central Asia for almost a century before being conquered by Genghis Khan's Mongolian army.
