Kazan, Khanate of

The Khanate of Kazan is a medieval Bulgarian-Tatar Turkic state that occupies the territory of former Volga Bulgaria between 1438 and 1552.
Its khans are the patrilineal descendants of Tugh Temür, the thirteenth son of Jochi and grandson of Genghis Khan.
The khanate covers contemporary Tatarstan, Mari El, Chuvashia, Mordovia, parts of Udmurtia and Bashkortostan; its capital is the city of Kazan.
It is one of the successor states of the Golden Horde, and it comes to an end when it is conquered by the Tsardom of Russia.
