Gela (Dorian Greek) city-state of
Years: 688BCE - 282BCE
Gela is a town and commune in the province of Caltanissetta in the south of Sicily, Italy.
The city is at about 84 kilometers distance from the city of Caltanissetta, on the Mediterranean Sea.
The city is founded around 688 BCE by colonists from Rhodos (Rhodes) and Crete, 45 years after the founding of Syracuse.
The city is named after the river Gela.
The Greeks have many colonies in the south of what is now Italy, and for many centuries the Greeks have a major influence on the area.
Gela flourishes and, after only a century, a group of Geloi founds the colony of Agrigento.
