Burid dynasty

Years: 1104 - 1154

The Burid dynasty is a Turkish dynasty that rules over Damascus in the early twelfth century.

The first Burid ruler, Toghtekin, begis as a servant to the Seljuq ruler of Damascus, Duqaq.

Following Duqaq's death in 1104, he seizes the city for himself.

The Burids gain recognition from the caliphate in return for considerable gifts.

In return, the caliphate does not interfere in the emirate.

They rule the city until 1154, when it is taken by the Zengid ruler of Aleppo, Nur ed-Din.The Burids lose to the Crusaders in the battle of Marj al-Saffar (1126) but are able to prevent the Crusaders from capturing Damascus.
