British Somaliland
Years: 1884 - 1960
British Somaliland, officially the British Somaliland Protectorate (Somali: Dhulka Maxmiyada Soomaalida ee Biritishka), is a British protectorate in present-day Somaliland.
For much of its existence, the territory is bordered by Italian Somalia, French Somaliland and Ethiopia.
From 1940 to 1941, it is occupied by the Italians and is part of Italian East Africa.
On June 26, 1960, British Somaliland declares independence as the State of Somaliland
Five days later, on July 1, 1960, the State of Somaliland voluntarily unites with the Trust Territory of Somalia (the former Italian Somalia) to form the Somali Republic.
The government of Somaliland, a self-declared sovereign state that is internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia, regards itself as the successor state to British Somaliland.
