The Kingdom of Asturias (Latin: Regnum Asturorum) Is a Kingdom in the Iberian peninsula founded in 718 by Visigothic nobles under the leadership of Pelagius of Asturias.
It Is the first Christian political entity established following the collapse of the Visigothic kingdom after the Islamic conquest of Hispania.
In 722, Pelagius subsequently defeats an Umayyad patrol at the Battle of Covadonga, in what is usually regarded as the beginning of the Reconquista.
The kingdom is followed up in 924 by the Kingdom of León when Fruela II becomes king with his royal court in León.
