When the state of Anhalt is dissolved in 1603, one of the successor states is the principality of Anhalt-Zerbst.

It is a small state with almost no political power.

In 1793, the line of the princes becomes extinct, and Anhalt-Zerbst is annexed by the neighburing principality of Anhalt-Dessau.
