Warwick, believing that he can continue to rule through Edward, presses him to enter into a marital alliance with a major European power.

Edward instead secretly marries the nonroyal Elizabeth Woodville, who has a large group of relatively poor but very ambitious Lancastrian relations.

The couple, wed on May 1. will keep the marriage a secret until the beginning of autumn, when Edward announces it as a fait accompli, to the considerable embarrassment of Warwick, who has been delicately negotiating a match between Edward and Bona of Savoy, the French king’s sister-in-law, convinced as he is of the need for an alliance with France.
