The teenaged Prince Chettha, Songtham’s eldest son …

Years: 1628 - 1628
August

The teenaged Prince Chettha, Songtham’s eldest son by his principal queen, ascends the Ayutthayan throne at his father's death instead of Songtham’s brother Si Sin, who is the Uparaja or titular successor to the throne.

Late in Songtham’s reign, however, Okya Sri Voravong, who had risen from his position as an influential royal page to the king, had persuaded the king to name Chettha as his successor.

Sri Voravong is known known as an able leader but also brutal.

Rising through violent means, he has crushed any suspects who could be a threat.

Most military leaders of the kingdom object to the king’s last wish, but Sri Voravong gains the support of Yamada Nagamasa, the Okya Senaphimok.

After launching a great purge of the nobility opposing the coronation of the new king, Chettha makes Sri Voravong the new Okya Kalahom Suriyavong—effectively the military head of the kingdom.
