Casualties on the Union side total 15,849, with 1,734 killed, 8,062 wounded, and an astonishing 6,053 reported missing.
Confederate casualties are much higher at 20,641, including 3,468 killed, 16,261 wounded, and 875 missing.
McClellan's failure to capture Richmond, and the subsequent withdrawal of the Union's Army of the Potomac from the Yorktown Peninsula, signifies the end of the Peninsular Campaign.
