Seventeen people are arrested and convicted for participating in the Kuwait attacks, for which the U.S. military takes no retaliatory action.

One of those convicted is Mustafa Youssef Badreddin, a cousin and brother-in-law of one of Hezbollah's senior officers, the Lebanese Imad Mughniyah.

After a six-week trial in Kuwait, Badreddin is sentenced to death for his role in the bombings.

Eighteen US servicemen are killed and eighty-three people injured in bomb attack on restaurant near USAF base in Torrejon, Spain, on April 12, 1984.

Hezbollah claims responsibility for the attack.

A suicide bomb attack on US Embassy in East Beirut kills twenty-three people and injures twenty-one others on September 20, 1984.

The U.S. and British ambassadors are slightly injured in the explosion, which is attributed to Hezbollah.

On March 8, 1985, a powerful car bomb in Beirut explodes at the entrance to the house of Hezbollah's spiritual leader, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah.

Seventy-five people are killed and more than two hundred civilians wounded.

Among the dead is Mughniyeh's brother.

Hunted by the CIA and the Mossad, Mughniyah hides in Iran.

On March 16, Iranian backed Islamic radicals kidnap US journalist Terry Anderson.

(He will not be released until December 1991.)

On April 5, a bomb explodes outside Hezbollah headquarters in Beirut killing 80 people.

CIA-backed Lebanese Christians are blamed.

On June 6, a TWA Boeing 727, Flight 847, is hijacked while en route from Athens to Rome by two Lebanese Hezbollah terrorists and forced to fly to Beirut.

The eight crews and one hundred and forty five passengers are then held for seventeen days, during which one American hostage is murdered.

After being flown twice to Algiers, on the aircraft's return to Beirut the hostages are released after the US Government pressures the Israelis to release four-hundred and thirty-five Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners.

Meanwhile, on June 9, Islamic terrorists abduct US academic Thomas Sutherland, of the American University (he will hold be held until 18 November 1991).

The Israelis under Shimon Peres began a final phased withdrawal from Lebanon in June 1985, except for a security zone where an Israeli-sponsored Lebanese force wages intermittent warfare against the Hezbollah, who enjoy Iranian and Syrian patronage.

An economic recovery plan also is put into place, assisted by the United States.

The Islamic Liberation Organization, which is thought to be a Hezbollah front, kidnaps four Soviet diplomats in Beirut on September 30.

One of the Russians is killed but the other three are released unharmed after a relative of the terrorist group's leaders is kidnapped and killed by the Soviet KGB.
