The UAE contributes personnel to the UN …

Years: 1992 - 1992

The UAE contributes personnel to the UN peacekeeping force in Somalia in 1992.

Backed by its fellow GCC members, the UAE objects vigorously when, in 1992, Iran strengthens its control over the disputed islands of Abu Musa, the Tunbs-Tunb al Kubra (Greater Tumb), and Tunb as Sughra (Lesser Tumb)-both seized by Iran in 1971.

The emirates respond by moving closer to the Western powers while maintaining a confrontational stance toward Iran.

The UAE is concerned that Iran intends to extend its control over the entire island, currently under a shared sovereignty agreement.

However, in November 1992, the two countries agree to abide by the provisions of the 1971 memorandum.
