The seafaring Phocaean Greeks of Massilia (present Marseille) in about 350 colonize a site (present Nice) on the Baie des Anges of the Mediterranean Sea about one hundred miles (one hundred and sixty kilometers) east of Marseille in southeastern France.

The city’s name probably named honors a victory (nike in Greek) over a neighboring colony.
