The first known mention of the name of Lithuania occurs in connection with the murder of Bruno of Querfurt, who had set out with eighteen companions in late 1008 to found a mission among the Prussians.

After successfully converting Netimer, a "king of Lithuanians", the group then traveled to the east, heading very likely towards Yotvingia, a Prussian region, subordinate since 983 to Kievan Rus.

Bruno is beheaded on February 14, 1009, whereas most of his companions are hanged the same day by Zebeden, brother of the newly converted Netimer.

Duke Boleslaus the Brave recovers the missionaries’ bodies and brings them to Poland.

Bruno and his companions will quickly become venerated as martyrs and Bruno will soon be after canonized.
