The Exarch Olympius, hostile to the Monothelitism imposed by Emperor Constans II, eventually decides to switch his allegiance and sides with the Pope, simultaneously declaring himself emperor.
He marches into Sicily in 652, either to fight the Saracens or the local imperial forces.
His army is stricken by an unknown disease, which kills Olympius this same year.
