Years: 100 - 243

The Eight Anthologies (and, possibly, the Ten Songs) represent the earliest literary works of southern India’s Tamil kingdoms.

Both, dealing with the characteristic themes of kingship and courtly love, are products of the Sangam literary academies, which, according to legend, lasted for millennia.

Thiruvalluvar, a celebrated Tamil poet and philosopher, writes the classic Tamil poem the Tirukkural, or sacred couplets, a nearly untranslatable collection of aphorisms treating love, government, society and virtue.

While most scholars place him between 100 and 300 CE, there are a few who consider him to have lived around 600 CE.

Jains, Buddhists and Shaivites claim him as their own.
