The Duchy of Courland is a focus of interest for both Sweden and Poland.

The Swedish army in 1655 had entered the territory of the Duchy and the Northern Wars began.

Duke Jacob is held captive by the Swedish army in 1658–1660.

Even so, during this period, both colonies continue to thrive.

During this period, both colonies are taken by more numerous Dutch colonists, and the merchant fleet and factories are destroyed.

The Dutch settlers on the island surround Fort James and force Hubert de Beveren, Governor of the Courlanders, to surrender.

Courland on December 11, 1659 officially yields New Courland.
