The coastal fleet's Sveaborg squadron under Colonel Mikael Anckarsvärd had been readied for action by mid-June and had departed on July 26 for Frederikshamn, carrying six thousand men, while a four thousand-strong unit advanced on land under General Carl Gustaf Armfeldt.

The Swedish coastal fleet clashes briefly with a group of Russian galleys outside Frederikshamn (Hamina) on July 28, and forces them to retire within the protection of the fortifications.
