Sultan Shah, a claimant to the title …

Years: 1193 - 1193

Sultan Shah, a claimant to the title of Khwarazm Shah from 1172, has over the past several years remained a threat to his brother Tekish, who has been forced to conduct expeditions into Khurasan several times as a result.

Despite this, Sultan Shah has been unable to make any significant gains against his brother.

He also has had occasional problems with the Ghurids in Afghanistan; in an 1189/1190 campaign they had invaded his territory, defeated him and took some of his possessions.

Sultan Shah had decided in 1192 to launch an expedition against Khwarazm, taking advantage of Tekish's absence there; the latter is at the time in western Iran dealing with the Seljuqs of Hamadan.

While the campaign is underway, however, he dies in 1193 and Tekish seizes some of his possessions, reuniting the Khwarazmid lands.
