The Shaker song Simple Gifts, written …
Years: 1848 - 1848
The Shaker song Simple Gifts, written in 1848 by Joseph Brackett in Alfred, Maine, will be largely unknown outside Shaker communities until Aaron Copland uses its melody for the score of Martha Graham's ballet Appalachian Spring (Shakers once worshiped on Holy Mount, in the Appalachians), first performed in 1944.
Copland will use "Simple Gifts" a second time in 1950 in his first set of Old American Songs for voice and piano, which will later be orchestrated.
