Fernando de Herrera, the leader of the southern school of Spanish poetry, patriotically praises the triumph of Don John over the Turks at Lepanto in his spirited Cancion por la vitoria del Senor Don Juan (“Song in Thanks for the Victory of Don Juan”), written in 1572.

In the same year, he also publishes a history, Relación de la guerra de Chipre y batalla naval de Lepanto (”Account of the War of Cyprus and the Naval Battle of Lepanto").
