Sir James Balfour, lord president of the Court of Session, has displayed competence as a judge and juridical writer despite his political treachery.
His testimony leads to the conviction and execution in June 1581 of Morton for complicity in the murder of Darnley.
Archibald Douglas, 8th earl of Angus, was son of the 7th earl, who was nephew of the 6th, and had succeeded to the earldom at the age of two.
During the regency of his uncle, Morton, he had risen rapidly to power, becoming privy councilor and sheriff of Berwick in 1573, lieutenant general of south Scotland in 1574, warden of the west marches and steward of Fife in 1577, and lieutenant general of the whole realm in 1578.
When Morton falls, Angus is declared guilty of high treason for supporting him and flees to London.
