Sertorius, following Sulla's return from the East …

Years: 83BCE - 83BCE

Sertorius, following Sulla's return from the East in 83 BCE and the subsequent collapse of the Populares' power, retreats to Hispania, representing the Populares as proconsul here.

The Roman officials in Hispania do not recognize his authority, but Sertorius, having an army, assumes control.

Sertorius seeks to hold Hispania by sending an army, under Julius Salinator, to fortify the pass through the Pyrenees; however, Sulla's forces, under the command of Gaius Annius, break through after Salinator is killed by treachery.

Sertorius is obliged to withdraw to North Africa.
