Some Imperial Russian Army officers stage the Decembrist Revolt against Nicholas's accession in Saint Petersburg on December 26 (December 14 O.S.), but it is thoroughly suppressed by the government after a brief uprising.
Tsar Nicholas I, attempting to centralize control of the empire and Russify its peoples, enacts oppressive measures against the Jews in 1825; he drafts a large number of underage Jews for military service, forces Jews out of their traditional occupations, such as the liquor trade, and generally represses the kehilot.
