Rome’s Fabius family, one of the several leading patrician families (gentes maiores) of Rome, reaches its greatest heights in this age.

Following the defeat in 145 of the Roman forces of Caius Nigidius by Viriathus' Lusitanians, the consul in 145, Quintus Fabius Maximus Aemilianus (the oldest brother of Scipio Aemilianus, but adopted into the Fabian gens), is appointed proconsul of Hispania Citerior and given the specific task of helping Caius Lelius defeat Viriathus and the Lusitanians with an additional fifteen thousand soldiers and two thousand horses.
