Roman general Flavius Ricimer, kingmaker in the West for the past fifteen years, has become involve in a quarrel with Western emperor Anthemius, to whose elevation by Eastern emperor Leo Ricimer had acquiesced in 467.

In the wake of the disastrous Roman expedition against the Vandals in 468, the relationship between Anthemius and Ricimer had grown increasingly hostile, despite Ricimer’s status as Anthemius’ son-in-law.

Ricimer elevates Olybrius to the throne soon after his arrival from Constantinople in April 472 and besieges Anthemius in Rome.
