Robert sends his son and heir, Roger Borsa, with an advance force against Kefalonia in early summer, himself sailing southward.

Robert occupies Corfu and Kefalonia with the help of Ragusa and the Dalmatian cities (which are under the rule of Demetrius Zvonimir) but the sickness is upon him.

On July 17, 1085, he dies of fever at Atheras, north of Lixouri, with his wife Sikelgaita beside him.

The town of Fiscardo on Kefalonia is named after him.

Immediately, Guiscard’s sons and nephews are plunged into quarrels and Constantinople’s shrunken empire is out of immediate danger.
