July
The Northern troops, reaching the James River and supported by Union gunboats, turn back Lee's final assaults at Malvern Hill on July 1. (Lee will later state in his official report that “Under ordinary circumstances the Federal Army should have been destroyed.”)
Lee has, however, forced McClellan to retreat from a position four miles (six kilometers) east of the Confederate capital.
