Texian and Mexican forces engage at Salado Creek, east of San Antonio, on September 17, 1842.

After a separate favorable Texian engagement earlier in the day, a reinforcement company of fifty-four Texas militia, mostly from Fayette County, under the command of Nicholas Mosby Dawson, begin advancing on the rear of the Mexican Army.

The Mexican commander, General Adrián Woll, sends five hundred of his cavalrymen and two cannons to attack the group.

The Texians hold their own against the Mexican soldiers, but their fatalities mount after the cannons come within range.

The battle lasts just over an hour, resulting in thirty-six Texians dead and fifteen captured in what Texans call the Dawson Massacre.
