Popular revolts have plagued the reign of the religious and humane, but authoritarian, Tsar Alexis.

The most serious of these is Razin’s large-scale peasant revolt, in which Razin organizes peasants who have fled Moscow for the freedom of the southern steppes.

At the beginning of 1668, he defeats the voivode Yakov Bezobrazov, sent against him from Astrakhan, and in the spring embarks on a predatory expedition into Daghestan and Persia that will last for eighteen months.
