Peterborough Cathedral, although damaged during the struggle between the Norman invaders and local folk-hero, Hereward the Wake, had been repaired and had continued to thrive until destroyed in 1116 by an accidental fire.
This event necessitates the building of a new church in the Norman style, begun on March 8, 1118 (Old Style), by Abbot John de Sais.
